You want to start losing weight, but you're not sure how to start, how much or how little to eat, and you don't really know how long it will take. The good news is there are some pretty simple weight loss percentage calculations you can use to get the answers you need!
The first weight calculator we want to tell you about is the one that helps you figure out how much of your body weight you need to lose. You can also use this calculator to determine what percentage of body weight you have lost as you make progress on your diet.
Here is the simple formula: Amount of Weight lost (or wanted to lose) / Starting Weight, then take that answer and subtract it from 100%. For example, if you weigh 200 lbs. and you want to get down to 150 lbs. your calculation would look like this: 150/200=.75, then we subtract: 100-75=25%. This shows that you need to lose 25% of your current body weight to reach that 150 lb. goal.
BUT! This number is somewhat arbitrary. Is this a healthy and realistic goal? We also have ways to calculate a safe percentage of weight loss.
We'll start with another calculator that is helpful it's called the BMI (or Body Mass Index). This formula compares your height to your weight. Remember you don't want to lose muscle mass, only fat, making this a good starting point for calculating how much weight you actually need to lose.
BMI= mass in pounds/(height in inches)2 x 703
So, let's say you weight 200 lbs. and you are 63 inches tall, your formula would look like this: 200/(63)2 x 703 = 35.4. This indicates that the percentage of body fat you are carrying around is 35%. Knowing that between 18.5 and 24.9 is considered normal, you now have a way to set a realistic healthy weight loss goal.
Now you haven't made an arbitrary guess about how much weight you should lose. You've used each weight loss calculator to determine the right amount of weight loss for your personal body.
