As of October 2013, there are over 100,000 people on the wait
list for Bariatric Surgery through the public system in Canada. That can
be, depending on the province, up to a 5 or 6 year wait - that is
another 5 years subjected to the physiological and emotional ravages of
obesity. Bariatric surgery offers a tool for permanent weight loss that
yes... require vigilant lifestyle adaptations, however it offers the
very best assurance for keeping adiposity within healthy levels &
metabolic health optimized.
The bariatric procedures offered in Canada by the public health care system and much of Europe are completely unnecessary or substandard to what is available now. Private health care facilities are abusively expensive, do not provide emergency care if necessary, only offer older procedures... they do not reflect the stellar health outcomes now very proven repeatedly with newer bariatric procedures. Consider these facts:
Gastric Bypass: Very invasive, high risk, compromised enjoyment of life for life, poor nutrient absorption, muscle wasting, great upheaval to hormone & neurotransmitter functions of the stomach which can also lead to depression & alcoholism. There are still horror stories worldwide which unfortunately reflect on all bariatric surgical procedures & facilities. This procedure is just not necessary, yes many years ago it was the gold standard - but medical research merits the over used word "awesome" when it comes to safer, better surgical fat loss procedures now available.
Gastric Banding: Substandard fat loss, high maintenance requiring fills & adjustments, does not have metabolic powers of newer surgeries to potentially put type 2 diabetes into remission, vomiting, food getting stuck, a foreign object in the body, slippage requiring band removal. Many facilities, in the name of cost cutting are using "knock off" bands, which are introducing more complexities and complications. Weight cycling a.k.a. "yo yoing" is all too common with banded patients, for numerous reasons including surgical accuracy, physiological & lifestyle related reasons.
The remission of type 2 diabetes & protecting future metabolic health should be a major factor in choosing a surgical procedure. Yes, a successful gastric bypass can offer this potential, but again the potential risks - and the DRASTIC effect on future lifestyle is just not necessary anymore. Even if diabetes is not present at time of surgery, having been in a metabolically taxed status such as obesity, leaves one more vulnerable to diabetes in later life.
More current procedures such as sleeve gastrectomy & gastric plications offer fat loss matching that of gastric bypass, without the muscle wasting due to poor nutrient absorption. They offer the metabolic relief of bypass & biliopancreatic diversions due to the procedures, not just the potential fat loss, again without the many risks & potential complications. The many magical mysteries of the stomach still being discovered, are left in tact with these newer procedures. However, these procedures are VERY dependent on the surgical team - there is still great discrepancy in success rates due to surgeon experience. Again, don't judge surgery based on one particular facility - look at the individual success of the surgeons. The very best available procedures are offered by very few surgeons worldwide.
Life is to be loved and enjoyed. Let's be honest - we love food. Yes we have to learn to eat responsibly & reap the rewards of that healthier cleaner system. Having our life encumbered with life long limitations of older bariatric procedures is just not a necessary price to pay any more. With these newer procedures we can still be a "foodie", and basque in the joy of a fitter, healthier body & all the psychological, physiological & emotional euphoria that escort a smiling flourishing inner ecosystem.
